Our Church has been doing PrayerReach for some time now and when we walk around the streets of our community we are always reminded that every home, every shop, and every building represents people—our neighbours. Some are friends, some we’ve never met, but all are known and loved by God.
As a church, one of the most important ways we can love our community is by praying for it. Prayer is not a last resort or a vague hope. Prayer is an act of faith, rooted in the conviction that God hears, God cares, and God acts.
Why Pray for Our Community?
The Bible calls us to pray not only for ourselves but also for the place where we live. In Jeremiah 29:7, God told His people in exile:
“Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.”
Our town may not be Babylon, but the principle is the same. We are to seek the peace, prosperity, and blessing of our community, not just by working hard or being good neighbours, but by bringing our town before the Lord in prayer.
Paul echoes this in the New Testament: “I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions” (1 Timothy 2:1–2). In other words, Christians are called to pray for their leaders, their neighbours, and their communities.
What Does It Mean to Pray for Our Community?
Praying for our town is more than asking God to fix problems. It’s standing in the gap, interceding for our neighbours, and asking the Lord to bring His kingdom near. Here are some ways we can pray:
- Pray for people’s needs. Families under pressure, schools and teachers, healthcare workers, those who are unemployed, the elderly, and the lonely.
- Pray for leaders. Our town council, teachers, business owners, and emergency services. They need wisdom, courage, and compassion.
- Pray for renewal. That hearts would be softened to the gospel, that lives would be transformed, that the light of Christ would shine in every corner of our town.
- Pray for protection. Against violence, despair, addiction, and division. Ask God to bring peace and healing.
How Can We Pray Together?
Over the next few weeks, our church will be taking part in a prayer outreach to our community. There are several simple but powerful ways you can join in:
- Prayer walks. Take a stroll through your neighbourhood and silently pray for the homes, schools, and businesses you pass.
- Prayer maps. Choose a part of town and commit to regularly praying for the people who live and work there.
- Pray Scripture. Read passages like Psalm 67 or Matthew 5:14–16 and turn them into prayers for our town.
- Family prayer times. Involve your children or grandchildren. Even a simple prayer like “Lord, bless our town and help our neighbours” is powerful in God’s sight.
- Gather with the church. Come along to our organised times of prayer. There’s something uniquely strengthening about lifting up our community together as God’s people.
Friends, prayer is love in action. When we pray for our community, we are seeking not only its good but also God’s glory. What our town needs the most is the presence and power of God.
So we invite you: join us in praying for our town in PrayerReach this autumn. Come walk with us in collecting prayer requests and praying together at church and ask God to do what only He can do.
And let us remember the promise of James 5:16: “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
Let’s pray faithfully, trusting that the Lord can use even our simple prayers to bring about His kingdom purposes here in Coleraine.
