By the end of January, the excitement of a new year often begins to fade.
The goals we set with good intentions may already feel heavy. Some plans didn’t last as long as we hoped. And in the quiet moments, we may wonder if we’ve already fallen behind — spiritually, emotionally, or even personally.
Into that space, Scripture speaks a gentler word.
God’s Mercy Meets Us Here
The book of Lamentations was written in a season of deep pain and loss. These words about God’s mercy weren’t written from a place of comfort or success, but from the middle of grief and disappointment.
And yet, the writer declares this hope: the Lord’s compassions never fail.
That means God’s mercy is not dependent on how well we started the year, how disciplined we’ve been, or how strong our faith feels today. His love does not run out when our energy does.
We are not sustained by our faithfulness, but by His.
New Every Morning – Not Just January 1st
When we hear the phrase “new beginnings,” we often think of fresh starts tied to dates and calendars. But Lamentations reminds us that God’s renewal is daily.
Not once a year.
Not only when we get everything right.
Every morning.
If you missed a day of prayer, today is a new morning.
If your Bible is still unopened this year, today is a new morning.
If you’re carrying regrets from the past weeks, today is a new morning.
God does not measure time the way we do. He meets us exactly where we are and invites us to take the next faithful step.
Faithfulness Over Perfection
This year does not need a better version of you – it needs the honest, present, willing you.
God is not asking for flawless spiritual routines or impressive resolutions. He is asking for trust, for openness, for a heart that keeps turning back to Him.
Small steps still count. Quiet prayers still matter. Simply showing up in faith, even when we feel weary or unsure, is an act of trust that God honours.
Stepping Forward Together
As a church, we step into this year leaning on this promise: “Great is Your faithfulness.”
Whatever this year holds – joys, challenges, changes, or unknowns – God’s mercy will meet us each morning. We move forward not with pressure to perform, but with confidence in His unfailing love.
So let us begin again today.
Not striving to become someone new,
but trusting the God whose mercy is always new.
